Cruising World magazine says, ...
"Sand, Blast, or Strip your way to a smooth bottom. Sailboat owners who want to come clean have tools to make the job easier... Soda Blasting, rapidly becoming today's removal method of choice, is a significant upgrade from ordinary...."
Soda Blasting your boat’s bottom with baking soda is the very best way to clean and strip the bottom of unwanted layers of old anti-fouling paint. Baking soda blasting (soda blasting) will not damage the boat’s delicate gel coat, but it will quickly, efficiently, and safely strip away all previous coatings. Soda blasting can even remove the epoxy barrier coat if you so desire. Traditional methods of removing old bottom paint – like sanding, scraping, and grinding – are very damaging to the gel coat. Blasting the surface with a high-pressure stream of baking soda removes multiple layers of old paint and if desired, opens up blisters for repair in a fraction of the time.
The actual soda blasting step only takes a few hours and depending on the size of the boat, the entire process can be completed in a day or less. No mess, no fuss. Your boat, your neighbor’s boat, and the environment are completely protected.
With Soda Blasting your boat’s bottom is cleaned and prepared for the next new coating in one easy step. Blasting a metal or wood hull with baking soda will not damage the substrate either. It will leave the surface finely etched and ready to accept the next new coating, whether it is an epoxy barrier coat, anti-fouling, or whatever else is desired. There is no additional surface profiling required.
BLISTER BLASTING THE SODA WAY
Traditional blister repair typically involves Sand Blasting, Chemical Stripping, grinding, sanding, and scraping the hull. This process is time-consuming, labor intensive and, unless extreme care is taken, can result in damage to the gelcoat and fiberglass laminate. Soda Blasting provides a fast, effective and controlled alternative to these conventional methods. Soda blasting can safely and quickly remove blisters and feather the edges for repair in only a few hours. In severe cases of blistering, the entire hull of a 35’-40’ boat can be simply and safely soda blasted in about a day. Compare that to the usual need for hundreds of man-hours of repair for heavily blistered hulls. Soda blasting can safely and effectively remove multiple layers of bottom paint and prepare blisters for repair at lower costs than traditional methods. GCSB allows a boat yard owner to turn his boats around in less time. Soda blasting is also environmentally friendly, a major concern for repair yards and marinas.
